...is the golf. That's not surprising. What is surprising is that the 4C was totally snubbed. It didn't even make it to the top ten, and they basically said it had a shitty kit car interior. Ouch.

That's bullshit.

it does have a crap int. yea, its great for track days and what not. and for showing off to your buddies. but to DD? nah man.

To rub salt in Alfa's wound, the Ghibli (said by some to be the worst luxury car made this year) got into the top ten.
In other words? Out of the two luxury FCA products they tested, they think the Ghibli is a better car than the 4C. Double ouch.

Seems like the hype is fading away.

The 4C can't be car of the year. Not that it's crap, but it's like an elise. Also, Motor Trend has a questionable history when it comes to COTY.

Why can't an Elise be car of the year?

And the 1989 Miata wasn't even considered.

I rest my case, your honor.

I was reading up on their long term mazda 3 since I have one and wanted to see what to expect. The guy said the golf may be car of the year but the 3 looks better, has a better interior, better gas mileage, and is way cheaper. I was left wondering what good the golf is.

No way...that has to be a shop or something...

The 4C won't, and shouldn't win anything until they figure out how to either
a) put a manual trans in it
b) make the dual-clutch trans worth a damn.

It is the truth, see Xzibit B:

Seems like a matter of definition to me, but it doesn't make any sense to even consider it as a mass-market DD COTY contender. Ditto the 4C. Ditto hypercars. Ditto Unimogs. They're deliberately highly compromised designs, which means they have some fairly massive downsides as well as the obvious upsides.

if you go back and look at the winners, I'd guess half of them are now looked at as crap. pt cruiser doesn't surprise me at all

I agree....but for a DD, I would take the Ghibli alfa. Who am i kidding. I';m too much of a jalop. That, and I normally DD a motorcycle, so ANY interior is an upgrade for me :P

It's silly to make a sports car with its purpose to bring back analog feel and give it a DCT. And it's silly to give it a DCT and make it function like an SMG. If only Lotus were Italian and pulled out of the U.S. market as it made FWD sedans for EU markets... the Elise would have been all that mattered to us right now.

and they wonder why we don't buy car magazines anymore.

Because it's an enthusiasts car. COTY is always a car that could be for the masses. A car for someone who only wants 1 vehicle. Could you DD an Elise? Maybe a handful of people could, but not just anyone.

Isn't the Golf in a way an enthusiasts car though?

They actually put a diesel in it. GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER MAZDA!

I was originally holding off before buying mine because they said they were bringing over the skyactive-d. But since no news on that I figured it wasn't worth holding my breath.
Edit: said originally 2x in one sentence.

I'd take the Mazda over the VW if they had the Skyactiv-D here. Alas I would have to go to VW to get a diesel hatch... Still waiting,,

Not when you remember it's a 5 door jetta. The GTI could be considered one I guess.

Ok, yeah. The older car might be. Like the REAL old one from like the 80's,
